A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a legally constituted organization created by natural or legal persons that operates independently from any government. In the cases in which NGOs are funded totally or partially by governments, the NGO maintains its non-governmental status by excluding government representatives from membership in the organization. Driven by people with a common interest, NGOs perform a wide variety of service and humanitarian functions, bring citizen concerns to Governments, advocate and monitor policies and encourage political participation through provision of information. Some are organized around definite issues, such as human rights, environment or health. They provide expertise and analysis, serve as early warning mechanisms and help implement and monitor international agreements. Their relationship with agencies and offices of the United Nations system differs depending on their goals, their venue and the mandate of a particular institution.

Non-governmental organization (NGO) is a term, which has become broadly accepted as referring to a legally constituted, non-governmental organization created by natural or legal persons with no participation or representation of any government. An association or non profit organized outside of institutionalized political structures to realize particular social objectives or serve particular constituencies. NGO activities range from research, information distribution, local organization, training, and community service to legal advocacy, lobbying for legislative change, and civil disobedience. NGO's range in size from small groups within a particular community to enormous membership groups with a national or international scope.
